Frequently Asked Questions — PIGMENT RED 2

What specific performance advantages does HP RED 2433 (Pigment Red 2) offer for water-based ink formulations?

HP RED 2433 (Pigment Red 2, C.I. 12310) delivers a high-strength, medium red shade with a slightly yellower undertone than PR112, making it ideal for water-based inks requiring cost-efficient pigmentation. With its optimized particle size distribution, this azo red pigment ensures excellent wetting and dispersion in aqueous systems, supporting smooth flow, good gloss in prints, and uniform color laydown for packaging gravure and flexo printing inks. Its specific density of approximately 1.5 g/cm³ and minimal bleeding in common solvents like xylene and methyl ethyl ketone further enhance reliability in industrial water-based ink applications.

How does the heat stability of Pigment Red 2 influence its suitability for industrial coatings?

Pigment Red 2 demonstrates heat stability up to 180°C, which is adequate for most low-to-medium temperature curing cycles in solvent-based and water-based paints, as well as industrial coatings. While not designed for high-temperature powder coatings, its stable thermal profile ensures consistent color strength and gloss retention during stoving processes. This property, combined with good light fastness and weather resistance, makes PR2 a cost-effective choice for interior and exterior architectural paints where thermal demands are moderate.

What makes Pigment Red 2 (PR2) more cost-efficient than alternative azo reds like PR112 or PR22 in paste inks?

Pigment Red 2 (C.I. 12310) offers high tinting strength, enabling up to 15–20% reduction in pigment loading compared to less strong reds like PR112, while still achieving deep, medium red hues. This translates directly to lower formulation costs per kilogram of paste ink. Additionally, its good gloss and dispersion ease in water-based and solvent-based systems reduce milling time and use of wetting additives, further improving total cost of goods for manufacturers. The specific shade—slightly yellower than PR112—also allows formulators to match target colors with fewer blending steps.

Can Pigment Red 2 (HP RED 2433) be used in both solvent-based and water-based printing inks without compatibility issues?

Yes, Pigment Red 2 (C.I. 12310) is designed for dual-solvent compatibility, recommended for water-based inks, paste inks, solvent-based packaging gravure, and flexo printing inks. In water-based systems, it provides good wetting, uniform dispersion, and minimal foam generation. For solvent-based inks, it offers excellent stability in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon blends, with low bleeding in xylene and methyl ethyl ketone. This cross-system suitability simplifies inventory management for ink producers who serve both segments, but always verify dispersion in the specific resin system during scale-up trials.

How should buyers evaluate supplier consistency for Pigment Red 2 to avoid batch-to-batch variation in ink production?

Buyers should request supplier data on particle size distribution (D50 and D90) and specific density (typically ~1.5 g/cm³ for PR2) to predict dispersion behavior in water-based and solvent-based inks. Consistent particle size within ±100 nm ensures repeatable color strength and gloss across batches. Additionally, check for controlled moisture content (<1%) and residual salt levels from synthesis, as these affect rheology in gravure inks. HP RED 2433 from HONOR Pigment provides batch-specific technical data, including C.I. Constitution No. 12310 and EINECS registration, enabling traceability without requiring standard technical parameters like heat stability and light fastness to be re-tested.
