Technical Information

What Is PY83 / HP YELLOW 1680

Pigment Yellow 83 (PY83) is a disazo condensation organic pigment known for its brilliant greenish-yellow shade and high molecular stability. Chemically classified as a disazo yellow, it provides superior heat resistance and migration fastness compared to standard monoazo yellows. In the industrial coatings market, PY83 occupies a premium position where long-term durability and color retention under harsh environmental exposure are required, making it a preferred choice for high-performance liquid and powder coating systems.

Why Choose HP YELLOW 1680

HP YELLOW 1680 is specifically engineered for industrial coatings and paints that must withstand prolonged outdoor exposure, chemical washdowns, or high-temperature curing cycles. Its perfect fastness properties—including lightfastness, weather resistance, and solvent bleed resistance—prevent color fade and chalk formation on equipment, machinery, and architectural metal panels. The high color strength of this grade reduces the pigment loading needed to achieve full chroma, which lowers formulation cost and maintains the coating’s mechanical integrity. In industrial environments, this translates to fewer repainting cycles, consistent batch-to-batch color, and reliable performance on substrates like coils, heavy-duty machinery, and transportation equipment where coating failure is costly.

Key Features

  • Its disazo condensation structure delivers exceptional lightfastness and weather resistance, ensuring industrial coatings retain their tint strength and gloss after years of UV exposure.
  • The pigment exhibits very low migration and blooming in solvent-based and powder coating systems, which prevents staining of adjacent layers or color bleeding into the coating film.
  • HP YELLOW 1680 maintains thermal stability at temperatures common to powder coating curing ovens, allowing formulators to achieve deep yellow shades without thermal degradation.
  • Its high hiding power and inherent color strength let industrial paint formulations use less pigment to reach target opacity, improving cost efficiency without sacrificing film performance.
  • The material resists acid, alkali, and chemical attacks typical in industrial environments, so coated parts can withstand aggressive cleaning agents and atmospheric pollutants without discoloration.

C.I.NO.: PY83

Advantage:  Perfect fastness, high color strength

Main Application Recommended: Industrial Coatings & Paints

Product Description – PY83

HP YELLOW 1680 (Pigment Yellow 83) transparency type and hemi-trans type, yellow HR02
It possesses excellent fastness properties, which make it almost universally applicable. It provides a reddish yellow hue, which is considerably more reddish than that of P.Y.13 and at the same time very strong. It is the standard pigment within the reddish yellow range. It shows good to very good resistance to most solvents which are typically found in application media. It shows excellent lightfastness, even in methylmethacrylate or unsaturated polyester cast resins. The pigment does not affect the hardening of the latter. It is also used to an appreciable extent in plastics. Because of its good solvent resistance, migration is no problem in plasticized PVC even at low pigment levels; it does not bleed or bloom. HP YELLOW 1680 (Pigment Yellow 83) is characterized by its remarkable versatility and strong performance in various applications. This pigment ensures consistent coloration and stability across a range of mediums, reinforcing its status as a preferred choice for manufacturers. Furthermore, its compatibility with different formulations enhances its usability, making it an essential component in industries such as coatings, plastics, and inks. Its superior fastness properties not only ensure longevity but also maintain the integrity of the final product, even under challenging conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About PIGMENT YELLOW 83

How does HP Yellow 1680 (PY83) compare to Pigment Yellow 13 in terms of solvent resistance for industrial maintenance coatings?

Pigment Yellow 83 (PY83) offers significantly superior solvent and migration resistance compared to PY13, which is critical for industrial coatings exposed to aggressive chemicals or high-heat curing cycles. While PY13 may be acceptable in low-cost decorative paints, it tends to bleed in strong solvents like MEK or xylene. HP YELLOW 1680 delivers excellent fastness properties, reducing the risk of blooming or recrystallization in high-solids polyurethane and epoxy systems. For purchasing managers evaluating long-term performance in heavy-duty machinery or bridge paints, HP YELLOW 1680 provides the durability needed for demanding industrial environments.

Can I substitute HP Yellow 1680 (PY83) directly for a diarylide yellow in a high-gloss coil coating formulation without retesting?

Direct substitution is not recommended despite HP Yellow 1680 (PY83) belonging to the diarylide class. Its larger particle size and higher crystalline stability alter rheology and dispersion requirements compared to generic PY83 variants. In high-gloss coil coatings, this can affect gloss retention and orange peel texture during rapid solvent evaporation. Compatibility testing with your specific resin system—especially polyester or silicone-modified polyesters—is essential. The takeaway for ink technicians: while HP YELLOW 1680 offers superior heat resistance, reformulation adjustments are needed to maintain existing application parameters.

Will HP Yellow 1680 (PY83) maintain color strength and lightfastness when used in exterior industrial paints exposed to UV radiation?

HP Yellow 1680 (PY83) demonstrates moderate lightfastness, making it suitable for industrial coatings where UV exposure is intermittent or indirect, such as interior machinery or factory equipment. However, for continuous exterior applications like outdoor storage tanks, it may fade faster than high-performance pigments like PY110 or PY138. Pigment Yellow 83’s strong chroma is best preserved when used in semi-opaque formulations with TiO2 or UV absorbers. The critical takeaway: for industrial paints requiring long-term outdoor durability, HP YELLOW 1680 is better suited to interior metal finishing or high-visibility safety markings rather than architectural exteriors.

What is the recommended storage protocol for HP Yellow 1680 (PY83) to prevent caking or moisture absorption in humid production facilities?

Pigment Yellow 83 (PY83) in powder form is hygroscopic and prone to caking under high humidity. Store HP Yellow 1680 in sealed, original containers at temperatures below 30°C (86°F) with relative humidity under 60%. Avoid direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations that cause condensation inside packaging. For bulk bags, use desiccant packs and avoid stacking near warehouse doors. Once opened, reseal immediately after use. The practical takeaway: improper storage can lead to poor dispersion in industrial coatings, causing specking or color strength loss. HP YELLOW 1680’s performance depends on dry conditions from receipt through formulation.

Why does my two-part polyurethane industrial coating show a greenish shift after adding HP Yellow 1680 (PY83), and how do I correct it?

A greenish undertone in polyurethane systems often results from PY83’s inherent blue-shade yellow in combination with acidic catalysts or isocyanate accelerators. Pigment Yellow 83 (PY83) can interact with metal driers or pH-sensitive additives, shifting the hue during curing. To neutralize this, adjust the formulation by adding trace amounts of red-shade yellow (e.g., PY110) or use a dispersant that stabilizes the pigment surface. Always test small batches with your specific activator. The key takeaway: HP Yellow 1680’s color stability in reactive systems requires controlled additive compatibility, so pre-qualify any accelerator changes for industrial coatings production.
