Pigment Yellow 3 (PY3, PY 3, C.I. Pigment Yellow 3; C.I. Constitution No. 11710; CAS 6486-23-3; EINECS/ELINCS 229-355-1; molecular formula C16H12Cl2N4O4) is a monoazo arylide yellow colorant. Chemically it is 2-[(4-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)azo]-N-(2-chlorophenyl)-3-oxobutanamide, a member of the classical Hansa-type yellows. In use, PY3 is appreciated for three properties that matter to ink and paint formulators: a clean greenish shade that is easy to match, very good lightfastness for an organic yellow (8 in full shade on the Blue Wool scale in our grade), and low tendency to bleed in common solvents and water-based binders. Is PY3 suitable for plastics or stoving enamels?
No – not as a general rule. The heat stability of HP YELLOW 1653 is 180 °C for a 10-minute exposure, which covers ink drying and low-temperature stoving but not typical plastics processing or high-bake industrial enamels, where blooming and shade shift can occur.
