- Light fastness: Light fastness rating is assessed on 1 to 8 Blue Wool scale where 1 = ‘Poor’ and 8 = ‘Excellent’.
- Heat Stability : Heat stability values given indicate the maximum temperature at which the pigment can be stoved for 10 min. on the full shade and in reductions without undergoing any significant change in shade.
- Oil absorption: The oil absorption is determined on the basis of EN ISO 787-5 and given in g linseed oil per 100 gm. pigment.
- Solvent bleeding: The bleeding in solvents is tested using the powder grades and the visual rating given on 1 to 5 Grey scale
where 1 = ‘Heavy bleeding’ and 5 = ‘No bleeding”

Frequently Asked Questions — PIGMENT YELLOW 62
Why is PIGMENT YELLOW 62 specifically recommended for plastic applications?
PIGMENT YELLOW 62 (C.I. 117315) is a medium to reddish yellow organic pigment optimized for plastic coloration due to its excellent bleeding fastness in plasticized PVC and high thermal stability. It is specifically recommended for HDPE, polystyrene, polyurethane, and PP spin dyeing. The pigment achieves a 4-5 level on the migration resistance scale in PVC, ensuring minimal color transfer in multi-layer or flexible packaging. Its specific density of 1.42 g/cm³ supports consistent dispersion in injection molding and extrusion processes.
What is the heat stability of PIGMENT YELLOW 62 in PE and PP?
PIGMENT YELLOW 62 exhibits heat stability up to 220°C in polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), making it suitable for high-temperature processing like injection molding and blow molding. Its light fastness rating of 6-7 (blue wool scale) ensures color retention in indoor applications. In HDPE, the pigment maintains shade consistency even with extended dwell times at 200-220°C. This heat stability is critical for achieving uniform color in masterbatch production for automotive interior parts or consumer goods.
How does PIGMENT YELLOW 62 perform in terms of plasticizer resistance?
PIGMENT YELLOW 62 offers superior plasticizer resistance due to its chemical structure (C17H15N4O7S1/2Ca) and specific surface area of 63 m²/g. In plasticized PVC testing, it achieves a migration rating of 5/5 (no bleeding) after 72 hours at 70°C. This makes it ideal for soft PVC applications like cables, flooring, or automotive upholstery where plasticizer migration could cause staining. The pigment also demonstrates good resistance to MEK and alkali, further enhancing its durability in chemically aggressive environments.
What are the key physical properties of PIGMENT YELLOW 62 for masterbatch processing?
PIGMENT YELLOW 62 has a specific density of 1.42 g/cm³ and specific surface area of 63 m²/g, which facilitates easy dispersion in polymer matrices. Its physical form (powder or granule) ensures low dusting during masterbatch compounding. The pigment offers oil absorption of 45-50 g/100g, enabling high loading (up to 40% in PE masterbatch) without compromising flow properties. For ABS and SAN applications, it achieves a heat distortion temperature resistance of 200°C, maintaining stability during injection molding.
Can PIGMENT YELLOW 62 be used in rubber and TPV applications?
Yes, PIGMENT YELLOW 62 is recommended for rubber and TPV (thermoplastic vulcanizate) applications per the technical datasheet. It demonstrates good resistance to sulfur curing systems and maintains color stability at vulcanization temperatures of 160-180°C. In EPDM rubber, it achieves light fastness of 6/8 and heat stability up to 200°C. Its low migration in rubber compounds makes it suitable for automotive weather seals and industrial hoses. The pigment’s alkali resistance (grade 5/5) also suits rubber applications exposed to cleaning agents.
