  • Light fastness: Light fastness rating is assessed on 1 to 8 Blue Wool scale where 1 = ‘Poor’ and 8 = ‘Excellent’.
  • Heat Stability : Heat stability values given indicate the maximum temperature at which the pigment can be stoved for 10 min. on the full shade and in reductions without undergoing any significant change in shade.
  • Oil absorption: The oil absorption is determined on the basis of EN ISO 787-5 and given in g linseed oil per 100 gm. pigment.
  • Solvent bleeding: The bleeding in solvents is tested using the powder grades and the visual rating given on 1 to 5 Grey scale
where 1 = ‘Heavy bleeding’ and 5 = ‘No bleeding”

Frequently Asked Questions — PIGMENT RED 176

What specific plastic substrates is Pigment Red 176 (HP RED 2585) suitable for?

Pigment Red 176 (CAS 12225-06-8, CI 176) is specifically recommended for a wide range of plastic substrates including PP, PE, PVC, Rubber/TPV, PS, and PU. In plasticized PVC, it demonstrates excellent migration fastness, making it a reliable choice for flexible and rigid vinyl applications. This benzimidazolone pigment delivers a bluish red shade, slightly bluer than PR.187 and PR.208, and slightly yellower than PR.185.

Can Pigment Red 176 be used in solvent-based inks, and what shade does it deliver?

Yes, Pigment Red 176 is a primary recommendation for solvent-based printing inks. Its bluish red shade is notably bluer than PR.187 and PR.208, while being slightly yellower than PR.185. This distinction is critical for ink formulators targeting precise color matching in solvent-based systems for packaging and publication applications.

How does the migration fastness of Pigment Red 176 perform in plasticized PVC compared to other reds?

Pigment Red 176 offers excellent migration fastness in plasticized PVC, outperforming many standard reds in this demanding substrate. This performance is directly linked to its benzimidazolone chemistry, which provides strong resistance to blooming and bleeding, especially when compared to less chemically robust pigments like PR.187 or PR.208. This makes it a top-tier choice for laminated papers and flexible PVC applications where migration is a critical failure point.

What is the chemical composition and CAS number of Pigment Red 176?

Pigment Red 176 is a benzimidazolone organic pigment with EINECS/ELINCS number in the 200-300 series. Its CI Constitution Number is 176, and it carries CAS number 12225-06-8. This specific chemical structure underpins its high heat stability—tested up to specified temperatures—and its strong light fastness, which are critical property benchmarks for masterbatch and engineering plastic producers.

Is Pigment Red 176 (HP RED 2585) suitable for water-based ink formulations?

Yes, Pigment Red 176 is technically suitable for water-based inks when formulated with appropriate dispersing and wetting agents. The product data specifically lists water-based inks as a recommended application alongside offset and solvent-based systems. For ink chemists, this means the pigment can be integrated into waterborne systems, though proper dispersion technology is required to achieve full color strength and stability.
