Product Description – PY83

HP YELLOW 1680 (Pigment Yellow 83) transparency type and hemi-trans type, yellow HR02
It possesses excellent fastness properties, which make it almost universally applicable. It provides a reddish yellow hue, which is considerably more reddish than that of P.Y.13 and at the same time very strong. It is the standard pigment within the reddish yellow range. It shows good to very good resistance to most solvents which are typically found in application media. It shows excellent lightfastness, even in methylmethacrylate or unsaturated polyester cast resins. The pigment does not affect the hardening of the latter. It is also used to an appreciable extent in plastics. Because of its good solvent resistance, migration is no problem in plasticized PVC even at low pigment levels; it does not bleed or bloom. HP YELLOW 1680 (Pigment Yellow 83) is characterized by its remarkable versatility and strong performance in various applications. This pigment ensures consistent coloration and stability across a range of mediums, reinforcing its status as a preferred choice for manufacturers. Furthermore, its compatibility with different formulations enhances its usability, making it an essential component in industries such as coatings, plastics, and inks. Its superior fastness properties not only ensure longevity but also maintain the integrity of the final product, even under challenging conditions.

  • Light fastness: Light fastness rating is assessed on 1 to 8 Blue Wool scale where 1 = ‘Poor’ and 8 = ‘Excellent’.
  • Heat Stability : Heat stability values given indicate the maximum temperature at which the pigment can be stoved for 10 min. on the full shade and in reductions without undergoing any significant change in shade.
  • Oil absorption: The oil absorption is determined on the basis of EN ISO 787-5 and given in g linseed oil per 100 gm. pigment.
  • Solvent bleeding: The bleeding in solvents is tested using the powder grades and the visual rating given on 1 to 5 Grey scale
where 1 = ‘Heavy bleeding’ and 5 = ‘No bleeding”

Frequently Asked Questions — PIGMENT YELLOW 83

What specific additive and fastness advantages does Pigment Yellow 83 (PY83) offer for industrial coatings?

Pigment Yellow 83 (CAS 5567-15-7, C.I. 21108) provides a reddish yellow shade, considerably redder than PY13, with excellent weather resistance and heat stability up to 200 °C. In industrial coatings including coil, powder, and architectural paints, it delivers high color strength and good to very good overall fastness, making it the standard pigment in the reddish yellow range. Its chemical formula C36H32Cl4N6O8 ensures strong performance in both solvent-borne and waterborne formulations when combined with appropriate dispersing agents.

How does Pigment Yellow 83 perform in offset and water-based printing inks compared to other yellow pigments?

In offset, water-based, solvent-based, and UV printing inks, Pigment Yellow 83 (PY83) exhibits excellent fastness properties and high color strength, significantly stronger than PY13. Its transparency type and hemi-transparent variants (HR02) allow formulation flexibility for process and packaging inks. The pigment maintains good to very good resistance to chemicals and light, ensuring stable hue reproduction across different ink systems.

Is Pigment Yellow 83 suitable for rigid PVC, PP, and PE applications in plastics masterbatch?

Yes, Pigment Yellow 83 demonstrates good heat stability and strong color development in PVC, rubber, PS, PP, PE, and PU. Its excellent fastness properties enable universal applicability in plastic masterbatch, with heat resistance typically above 200 °C and light fastness ratings of 7–8 (on the 1–8 scale) depending on concentration. This makes it a reliable choice for both interior and exterior plastic articles.

What are the key physical and chemical properties of Pigment Yellow 83 that impact dispersion and stability?

Pigment Yellow 83 (PY83, EINECS 226-939-8) is supplied as a powder with controlled particle size for easy dispersion. It shows resistance to acid and alkali, good oil absorption (typically 40–60 g/100 g), and a density around 1.4–1.6 g/cm³. These properties, combined with its heat stability, ensure consistent performance in coatings, inks, and plastics during processing and end-use.

Why is Pigment Yellow 83 considered the industry standard for reddish yellow shades in industrial paints?

Pigment Yellow 83 achieves a distinctly reddish yellow hue, providing the highest color strength among standard yellows in industrial coatings. Its weather resistance and heat stability up to 200 °C make it suitable for coil, powder, and architectural paints that require long-term durability. The combination of strong tinting power and fastness properties has made PY83 the benchmark for reddish yellow organic pigments worldwide.
