What Is PV23 / HP VIOLET 6362

CAS 6358-30-1, CI 51319, Dioxazine type. This carbazole dioxazine violet grade delivers the highest tinting strength of any organic violet pigment, with a clean bluish shade and excellent lightfastness (7-8 Blue Wool) and heat stability to 200°C. Its niche lies in solvent-based inks, industrial paints, and automotive paints, where it provides deep, pure violet masstone without dullness even at very low concentrations, often used as a shading component to intensify or adjust color depth in these demanding applications.

Why Choose HP VIOLET 6362

HP VIOLET 6362 is the optimal choice when you need a bluish, Belta-type dioxazine violet with maximum color strength and purity for solvent-based inks, industrial paints, and automotive paints. In solvent systems, its high tinting strength reduces pigment load, improving dispersion stability and cost efficiency; for industrial and auto paints, the clean violet masstone and heat stability up to 200°C ensure consistent color even under baking conditions. Unlike sibling grades—HP VIOLET 6172 (undefined positioning), HP VIOLET 6585 (optimized for flow and gloss), and HP VIOLET 6374 (no specific advantage listed)—this grade is selected when you require the strongest, most brilliant bluish-violet without any dullness in deep shades, making it ideal for high-end shading or as a primary violet in formulations where color purity is critical.

Key Features

  • Highest tinting strength of any organic violet pigment, allowing solvent-based inks to achieve deep shades with minimal pigment usage and better cost control.
  • Excellent lightfastness (7-8 Blue Wool scale) ensures industrial and auto paints retain their vibrant color over years of outdoor exposure without fading.
  • Heat stable to 200°C, making it reliable for automotive baking enamels and high-temperature industrial paint curing processes without shade shift.
  • Clean bluish-violet masstone with no dullness, critical for solvent-based inks that require pure, intense shading components to adjust color targets accurately.
  • Very low effective concentration needed for deep violet, enabling auto paint formulations to produce rich, saturated finishes with excellent transparency or hiding power as required.

Frequently Asked Questions About PV23 / HP VIOLET 6362 (CAS 6358-30-1, CI 51319)

How does HP VIOLET 6362 perform specifically in solvent-based industrial and auto paints versus solvent-based inks?

HP VIOLET 6362 is a beta-phase carbazole violet engineered for superior solubility and color strength in polar and aromatic solvent systems. In industrial paints and automotive OEM/refinish formulations, it delivers high transparency and deep violet hues with excellent gloss retention due to its narrow particle size distribution. For solvent-based inks, especially gravure and flexo, it provides lower rheological impact (viscosity stability) and rapid solvent release, which reduces drying defects like mottle or cratering. Unlike generic PV23, this grade minimizes interaction with binder resins (e.g., nitrocellulose, acrylics) to prevent flocculation. Its purity ensures no bleed in overcoats. For formulations requiring consistent shade across solvent-borne media, HP VIOLET 6362 offers reliable dispersion and color fidelity.

What are the key performance limits of HP VIOLET 6362 in terms of lightfastness and heat resistance?

HP VIOLET 6362 provides excellent lightfastness (7-8 on the blue wool scale) in full shade, but its resistance drops to moderate (5-6) in let-downs with high TiO₂ loading due to photobleaching of the beta-phase crystal. Heat resistance is robust up to 220°C for short exposures (10 min), making it suitable for baking enamels; beyond 240°C, irreversible color shift to blue-grey occurs. In automotive clearcoats, UV absorber packages are recommended to preserve depth. It withstands outdoor weathering in industrial coatings for 5-7 years without significant fade when properly stabilized. For high-heat applications like oven-dried can coatings, avoid prolonged dwell above 200°C. HP VIOLET 6362 delivers industry-standard durability for solvent systems when thermal and UV limits are respected.

How does HP VIOLET 6362 compare to other PV23 grades like PV23 (gamma-phase) or low-dust PV23 variants?

HP VIOLET 6362 is a beta-phase PV23, offering distinctly redder, stronger, and more transparent shades than gamma-phase PV23, which tends toward blue-dull tones. Versus low-dust or encapsulated variants, HP VIOLET 6362 has a higher specific surface area (≈80 m²/g) for faster color development in solvent systems, but requires optimized dispersion due to higher dusting risk. It outperforms rival beta-grades in gloss retention (up to 90% at 60°) and resists re-agglomeration in high-shear processing. Gamma-phase grades are more opaque and economical for mass-tone applications; HP VIOLET 6362 excels in transparent and effects pigment blends for automotive and industrial coatings. For vivid, red-shade violet with high clarity, HP VIOLET 6362 is the superior beta-phase choice.

What dispersion and processing conditions are recommended for HP VIOLET 6362 in solvent-based paints and inks?

HP VIOLET 6362 requires a premix with 10-15% of total binder resin using a high-speed dissolver at 5,000-6,000 fpm tip speed. For full color development, bead milling with 1.0-1.5 mm zirconia beads at a mill base viscosity of 25-40 Poise is mandatory. Avoid water contamination (below 0.5% in solvent) to prevent crystal phase change and dulling. Recommended solvent blends include xylene/butyl acetate (70:30) for paints, or ethyl acetate/ethanol for inks. Over-grinding beyond 8 hours reduces opacity without strength gain. Add dispersing agents (e.g., BYK-110) at 3-5% of pigment weight to stabilize pre-dispersion. For consistent batch-to-batch jetness, control millbase temperature below 60°C. HP VIOLET 6362 responds best to gentle but complete grinding for optimal electrostatic charge in auto paints.

What are the storage requirements and possible substitution scenarios for HP VIOLET 6362?

HP VIOLET 6362 powder should be stored in sealed containers at 15-30°C with relative humidity below 60%; it absorbs moisture (up to 2%) and will agglomerate in damp conditions, causing grit specks in final coatings. Shelf life is 36 months from manufacture in original packaging. As a substitute for CI 51319, HP VIOLET 6362 replaces older beta-PV23 grades like Hostaperm Violet RL or Ciba Violet RL equivalently at 1:1 weight ratio, but requires dispersion tweaks. It is not a direct drop-in for dioxazine violet (PV23 gamma) or quinacridone violet (PV19) due to different shade and rheology. For green-shade needs, consider PV23 gamma or PB29. For red-shade automotive jobs, HP VIOLET 6362 is the benchmark and should be substitution-tested only with identical beta-phase materials.
